What this course promises, and what it does not
This course was born from sobering research. We built our own prediction models, tested them on more than 50,000 matches across 11 seasons, and measured seven profit-seeking methods end to end. None of them worked: the bookmakers' closing price, the last odds before kick-off, was more accurate than every model we built. We show the numbers, failures included, in chapter 14. That is why we teach understanding and measurement instead of selling tips.
We promise
- You read out of the odds what chance the bookmaker is pricing in, and you calculate the margin: the built-in fee the bookmaker does not list separately.
- You learn to check a tipster's published record in a few simple steps and to test whether a pretty run of results could be pure luck.
- If you bet, you learn to measure your decisions in numbers: you keep a log and track CLV, i.e. whether you got a better price than the closing odds. It measures decision quality, it does not promise winnings.
- You learn bankroll management: how to divide a gaming budget and stake sizes by rules set in advance, so that momentary mood does not decide.
- You learn to notice when the numbers do not give enough basis for a decision. We teach skipping as a strategy.
We do not promise
- We do not give tips. No match, no team, no betting slip from us; thinking tools instead.
- We do not promise profit. Run from anyone who promises a sure thing: they either never measured themselves or will not tell you. We measured, and we published.
- No secret system. Open maths and statistics: we derive the formulas and show our failed experiments too.
- Not betting advice and not investment advice: we teach general methodology, we do not make individual decisions for you.
- We do not ask for blind trust. 19 of the 47 chapters are free to read without registration: see what we know first, then decide.
Basics
The language and mathematics of sports betting: how a bookmaker works, what odds mean, and how to calculate with them.
Value and the market
In the long run, value decides. What EV is, what CLV is, and what market efficiency says about your chances of winning.
The world of bookmakers
Soft and sharp bookmakers, limiting, exchanges, bonuses and arbitrage: the betting industry’s machinery from the inside.
Variance
The heart of the course: the mathematics of luck. Whoever understands this understands why the winner gives up and why the loser thinks himself a genius.
Money management
Bankroll, stake sizing, the Kelly criterion and the metrics that give you a clearer view of where you actually stand.
Models
Poisson, Elo, xG, calibration and machine learning: how a probability model is built, and where the backtest goes wrong.
Psychology and reality
Cognitive biases, tilt, the tricks of the tipster industry and the reality of the professional world, plus responsible gambling.
Using the platform
The LabOfMetrics handbook: account and plans, models and AI analysis, market-watch tools, journal, simulator and the research pages. When to look at what, and how to read it.
Practice
Knowledge tied to the platform: record keeping, taxation, and the capstone project of building and validating your own strategy.
Important reminder: The course is educational content, not sports-betting or investment advice. The outcome of sporting events is uncertain, betting can lead to losses, and every decision is made at your own risk. Gambling is prohibited for under-18s. If you feel that gambling is becoming a problem, seek help.
