The signs of addiction, in yourself

This chapter is not about others but about you, because problem gambling does not come overnight but gradually, and from the inside it stays unnoticed for a long time. The signs to take seriously: ever larger stakes are needed for the same excitement, you conceal the extent of your betting, after a loss you feel an immediate "win it back" compulsion, betting comes at the expense of your work, your relationships or your sleep, you bet from borrowed money or money meant for something else, and you regularly override your own rules (chapter 36).

A separate warning sign is when betting becomes a mood-regulation tool: it is not the match that interests you but the "buzz", and you handle bad days with betting. All the maths knowledge of the course is secondary at this point: addiction is not a lack of knowledge but a health issue, and is to be treated as such.

An honest self-test: in the past month, how many times did you bet beyond your planned budget, and how many times did you conceal it? If the answer is not "zero and zero", this chapter is not to be skimmed but used.

Self-exclusion and limit tools

The modern gambling environment offers built-in protective tools, and these really work when set in advance, in a calm state: a deposit limit (a fixed monthly cap the bookmaker will not let you exceed), a stake limit, a time limit and session reminders, and self-exclusion, with which you can close your access for a set period or permanently.

The strength of the tools is in their irreversibility: a limit increase typically takes effect only with a delay, so the tilt moment cannot immediately dismantle the protection. If you feel that gambling is slipping out of your hands, ask for help: free, anonymous helplines and professionals are available for treating gambling addiction (check the resources in your country), and asking for help is not weakness but the only step that really matters at that point.

A limit tool is not the crutch of the weak but the equipment of the aware: exactly like the bankroll rule (chapter 24), only one level up. In advance, calmly, permanently.

Free help for problem gambling in Hungary: the player protection green number, 06 80 205 352 (toll-free within Hungary, available 24 hours a day, anonymously). Further support organisations and self-exclusion options are listed on the official player protection page of the Hungarian Gambling Supervisory Authority. If you live in another country, check the free helpline available there.

When NOT to bet?

The course’s closing list of rules, and perhaps the most important. Do not bet: under financial pressure (the "must win" is the worst starting point), to improve your mood or to kill boredom, alongside alcohol or anything mind-altering, in a state of tilt (chapter 36), from borrowed money or money meant for something else, and never because you regard betting as an income plan; chapters 14 and 38 showed why it is not.

And the positive side: when does betting fit? If it is entertainment whose price you know (chapters 4, 7-8), it comes from a pre-set, separate budget (chapter 24), within rules (chapter 36), and you can put it down at any time without missing it. The course is not anti-betting: it is pro-transparency. We want that if you play, you know exactly what, why and for how much.

Gambling is prohibited for under-18s. If you feel that gambling is causing a problem for you or someone close to you, ask for help; free and anonymous options are available. No single match, no single slip is worth as much as a runaway gambling habit can take.
